Welcome
to the first Uralla Book Festival, a three-day event in September for
people who love writing and reading. Some events combine with the New
England Writers' Centre's Spring Festival which runs from July to October.
ALL EVENTS REQUIRING ADVANCE BOOKING, MUST BE
BOOKED THROUGH THE PHONE NUMBERS GIVEN FOR EACH EVENT. Tickets for these
events will not be issued, receipts will be given out at the door.

Writing Fantasy - from
inspiration to revision. A two-day workshop with bestselling fantasy
author, Ian Irvine, covering the art and
craft of developing fiction from ideas, through research and revision
to final draft.

Mapping
Fiction – dinner with fantasy
writer Ian Irvine, who will give a talk on how he constructs fictional
worlds. Also, Works: 2003, the New England Writers' Centre anthology
will be launched, with performances by authors; and the Uralla
Short Story and Local History prizes will be awarded. The Hon
Mr Richard Torbay, MP, will launch the festival and award the
prizes.

The Monkey's Mask – a showing
of this acclaimed film, followed with a talk by Dorothy Porter,
author of the verse-novel on which the film was based. The
Monkey’s Mask won the Age Book of the Year for Poetry,
the National Book Council Award for Poetry and the Braille Book
of the Year. It has been adapted for stage and radio, as well
as this film which was released internationally in 2001.

Breakfast
with Dorothy Porter – one
of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling poets in Australia,
Dorothy will talk through breakfast about her own work and issues
in literature, including her new book, Wild Surmise, and the Miles
Franklin shortlisted, What a Piece of Work.

Creative Non-Fiction – a
two-day workshop with Barbara Brooks, author of the biography,
Eleanor Dark: A Writer’s Life. Writing creative nonfiction
doesn’t mean inventing, it means being imaginative and inventive
in your approach to your material
- in the way you use language, and the way you shape and select
and present your material.

Walking Skin –
Sydney poet and songwriter, Terry McArthur will perform excerpts
from his new book, Walking Skin, a meditation on love, beauty,
and death in a multi-media performance melding spoken word, sung
vocals, video, and music.

Fantasy in the Park – a day
of fantasy for children

9.30am registration ($5) at the Community Centre, Uralla, followed
by storytelling (10am), parade (11am) to Porter Park for Reading
and Talk by fantasy writer Ian Irvine (12.30) and a battle-performance
by the Medieval Society (1pm).
