novel by Ruth Bernard. This family saga spanning three generations begins
in war-torn Austria and ends in Armidale! 6.30pm-8.30pm. Free to members/$2

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8: Olives, Rivers & Words An Evening
with Patrice Newell, author of The Olive Grove and The
River. Seventeen years ago, Patrice, and her partner Phillip Adams,
moved to a 10,000-acre grazing property in the Upper Hunter Valley.
Her first bestselling book told the story of her move from a television
career to growing olives and producing biodynamic beef. The sequel tells
the story of the Pages River, and the wider story of our deteriorating
waterways and, consequently, life on the land. St Kilda Hotel, Marsh
St, 6pm for 6.30 start, to 9.30pm. Books will be available to buy and

during this week there will be readings by indigenous writers across
NSW. Our event, "Words & Song", features young and soon to be published
poet Annaliese Porter, and music by singer-songwriter, L.J. Hill, at
the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural and Keeping Place, Kentucky St. 7pm.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16: Writing for Profit,
a one-day workshop with Lesley Sly on the art and craft of freelance
journalism. Learn how to find and develop stories, pitch angles to editors,
write in style for a variety of markets, syndicate stories, and run
this writing career as a small business. Lesley's work has appeared
in numerous overseas and national magazines, including The Bulletin,
