| NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN TRAINING METHODS.
In addition to the reform process developments are occurring in the methods and types of training. These include: * Competency - based training. Developed jointly by Federal and State governments it is an alternative to the traditional time - served system in order to try and save time and resources. * Improved links between on - the - job and off - the - job training. The quality of training is enhanced when classroom training compliments training in the workplace. Innovations at tertiary, TAFE, industry skill centres and trainer training is helping to address this situation. * Career path opportunities. The incorporation of career paths in both enterprises and awards enables employees to 'build' on their training. * Self - learning and distance learning training packages. Computer, video and audio teaching aids are being developed to assist people and enterprises that are geographically isolated. * Trainer training. With restructuring there is a need for more employees to be skilled as trainers. These skills may be incorporated into the award classification. * Literacy and numeracy training. Training packages are attempting to address this issue in the workplace. * Modular training. Training programs are divided into modules with both core and optional components to provide a gradual scale of qualification. This method is flexible and people acquire skills relevant to both their industry and individual enterprise. * Improved entry - level training. The use of traineeships as a mode of entry - level training is expanding into many industry areas. Linkages between broad - based vocational courses in the schools and entry - level training in industry are being created. * National consistency in training standards. Across Australia there are some inconsistencies in training agreements and standards that affect the mobility of the labour force and create extra costs for industry. However, efforts are being made to achieve national consistency through the National Training Board and the Australian Committee on TAFE Curriculum. Australia is well served by institutions and organisations that can provide training in many of the above areas. They range from courses that give people a result notice of competency through to Masters degree level. |
