USING A TELEPHONE TO APPLY FOR A JOB.

The three most common methods of applying for a job are by telephoning, by sending in an application form or by writing a letter.

TELEPHONE CALLS.

If you are telephoning to apply for a position advertised in a newspaper you will probably have a brief conversation with the receptionist in order to make an appointment for an interview.

Sometimes, however, you will speak to a personnel manager and this conversation will be the first round of the interviewing procedure.

To do well at the later you need to practise in advance. A tape recorder can be used to ask and answer possible questions that a prospective employer might ask. Writing down the questions and your answers assists when you need to think quickly.

Although using the phone is quicker and easier for everyone concerned it is not always that easy to do well as the employer only has your voice and answers as a guide.

The following points can be very useful in helping you to secure an interview from a phone conversation.

* know who to ring - may be their name or title (ie. personnel manager), * have a clear understanding of what the job involves. If you are not sure ring the firm before hand and seek clarification, * introduce yourself, speak clearly and avoid having any excess background noise such as radios or TV * have a copy of the advertisement in front of you with a list of questions you want to ask. Avoid questions such as rates of pay, holidays or promotions at this stage. Concentrate on details of the job, training and expectations. Have a pen and paper handy to take down notes, * be prepared to answer questions about yourself. They include age, education, qualifications, experiences and your reasons for wanting this job. Avoid saying because you need the money. Everyone does but employers are looking for a greater commitment to work than that.

If you are offered an interview write down WHERE and WHEN the interview will take place and with WHOM. Before finishing thank the person for the interview. If kept waiting on a line try and relax. Good luck.
